Scyphozoa (Cyaneidae)

Little cousin of the famous "lion's mane jellyfish" (Cyanea capillata), it prefers the cold waters of the Atlantic and the English Channel. It is completely absent from the Mediterranean.

Sting symptoms

Painful sting comparable to nettles. Causes temporary redness.

Identification

Translucent blue to purple (sometimes yellowish in juveniles). Its umbrella is slightly lobed (scalloped) and it trails an abundant "mane" of dozens of fine tentacles.

Umbrella: 15 to 30 cm
Habitat
Coastal waters and open sea (cold to temperate waters).
